The RSL in Victoria have provided 100 suburban and regional football teams with football jumpers carrying the iconic marks of the RSL and the ANZAC Appeal. 

The Canterbury Cobras Under 14 Team were honoured to be presented with these jumpers on behalf of our club for the round one clash against Brunswick at Gillon Oval on April 23.  As leaders of our Cobras playing group, the U14 boys will wear these fantastic jumpers with pride for the entire 2017 season. 

For the Canterbury Cobras, this program is particularly close to the heart of our community club.  The Canterbury Junior Football Club jersey colours were derived back in 1915.  The local community in Canterbury chose the red, yellow and black colours as a tribute to those ANZACS fighting in Flanders at the time.  This ‘Belgian inspired’ playing strip proved popular until the next world war came along.  After the second world war, Germany adopted the red, yellow and black flag, prompting the Canterbury Football Club to move to a more patriotic green and gold playing strip until 1949, when the original design was worn once again. 

Of course today we continue to wear the colours of the Belgian flag as a tribute to those men and women who fought for our country in the fields of Flanders a century ago.  Lest we forget.
