Welcome to Season 2021.
Canterbury Junior Football Club is the Home of the Cobra's. The Cobras focus on having a
friendly family environment, with an emphasis on learning the game in a supportive yet
competitive environment. We offer Boys, Girls and mixed teams from U8's - U14's (Girls to
U/17’s) and then a pathway to Colts at the Boroondara Hawks.
The Cobras are committed to getting as many Boys and Girls back out on the Footy field as
possible for this coming year.
As we know, the 2020 season didn’t quite get started, so the Cobras are pleased to
announce that registration Fees for 2021 will be reduced for all those registered 2020
Players. The reduction reflects a credit from the YJFL of $77.45 for all returning players.
Furthermore, all Players in U/8’s & U/9’s, plus all Girls will receive an introductory
registration fee to encourage as many players as possible into this wonderful sporting Club.
The Cobras introduced Girls teams in 2018 and numbers have grown significantly each year.
In 2021 we expect to have girls teams up to the U17’s age group, and mixed teams in U8 &

Dear Cobra Families
2020 was obviously a year like no other, but we have dusted ourselves off and started planning for a great 2021 season. This year has taught us that anything can happen, but we believe it is important to plan as if things are pretty much back to normal.
The Cobras are committed to getting as many boys and girls back out of the Footy field as possible for 2021.
We are very pleased to announce that registration Fees for 2021 will be substantially reduced for all those Players who were registered in 2020.
Fees will be reduced by $77.45 to all those Players who were registered in 2020, as a credit from the YJFL.
Furthermore, all U/8 and U/9 players and all girls will receive a subsidised registration fee.
Registrations will be available through SportsTG (link is via our web page) and will officially open in the 3rd week of January.
Watch out for our communication with details of how to register!
2021 teams, coaches and team managers – let’s go again!
We are sure that you were all disappointed at getting so close to starting in 2020, only for it to all come to a halt. Teams, coaches and team mangers were in place, gear was sorted, we were ready to go. To make things easier in 2021, we would love to just pick up where we left off. Where possible, we want the same teams, the same coaches and the same team managers.
You will hear more from us soon on this, but this is the approach we will try and follow.
Boroondara Hawks and our 2020 U14 boys
Canterbury JFC has supported the concept of the Boroondara Hawks for several years. The overriding aim is to make sure that boys who want to play club footy can continue to do so. Some years we have enough for a team, or two, in under 15s, sometimes we don’t. By joining with neighbouring clubs under the banner of the Hawks, we can ensure there will always be a pathway for our boys to continue beyond U 14 footy.
This next season is a funny one, as we have two great U14 teams from 2020 that did not get to play their final year with the Cobras.
We are planning 2 major responses to address this; The two Cobra u14 2020 teams will largely stay together and form 2 teams at the Boroondara Hawks with each team either being topped up by boys from other clubs or potentially 3 teams if the numbers are strong enough. Like the Cobras, Boroondara traditionally don’t hard grade and will work with our teams and our coaches to ensure the boys can play in their chosen groups, again this will depend on numbers. Essentially, if all of our under 14s choose to play at the Hawks the nucleus of each team will be the Cobras. The Coaches will go across to Boroondara, and we hope the team managers will as well.
Partly because they missed out on a big final year, but also because we hate seeing Cobras disappear after U14s, we will be welcoming the Boroondara Hawks back to the club as much as possible. They will be invited to Sippers and will be made to still feel part of the Cobras family, even if they must wear brown. Once a Cobra, always a Cobra. Just ask Matt Rowell.
One of the great successes of recent years has been the introduction, then growth of girls footy at Canterbury. We are super keen for this to continue. Unlike the boys, we maintain the girls playing beyond U14 and this year will look to have teams from U10 to U17.
Since its inception 3 seasons ago, each year our girl’s numbers have grown, and we hope that trend continues. For season 2020 we appointed some wonderful female role models to be part of the coaching ranks and this is also something that we expect, and hope will continue.
The plan is to find a vacant oval in early February to enable some early training sessions to pick up where we left off and continue the momentum that the Cobra’s girls’ teams have created.
2021 will see several Committee members serving their final year as their kids reach the end of their time at the Cobras. The Committee has continued to evolve over the last few years as we have regularly welcomed new members on board. We are always keen to hear from people who would like to contribute and there will always be a job for anyone willing to help. It is a fabulous club, and all would agree that working with the committee is very rewarding.
Please speak to a committee member if you are interested in being involved.
Over the last few years, a few Cobra Committee members have been instrumental in developing plans for new club rooms at Canterbury Sports Ground. We are excited to announce that the Boroondara Council has committed $200k for design and planning, and a further $2 million towards the redevelopment of the Canterbury facility.
Whilst the exact date for the commencement of work is yet to be finalised council’s commitment is great reward for a lot of work and effort to bring the Canterbury facility up to scratch. It is also worth noting that the Committee received generous contributions from many Cobra families in preparing our numerous submissions to council not the least being Paul and Merran Porjazoski Directors of BENT ARCHITECTURE who provided us with plans to go with our submission at no cost to the Club. Clubs like ours do not survive let alone thrive without the support of people like Paul and Merran so as always, we ask you to support them.
Congratulations to ex Cobra Reef McInnes who was selected at pick 23 by Collingwood in the 2020 AFL Draft.
Reef started his junior career at the Cobras before moving on to the Boroondara Hawks. It's very exciting to see yet another Cobra join the AFL and we wish Reef all the very best for his football journey.
We are looking to host a pre-season sippers early in 2020. The Committee is keen to get everyone back together for a BBQ to say thanks to all our Cobra Families for their support over the past 12 months. We will provide further details in the coming weeks.
We wish you a safe and joyous festive season and look forward to a successful 2021 and getting the Cobras back on the park stronger than ever.
Another Cobra Drafted
Congratulations to ex Cobra Reef McInnes who was last night selected at pick 23 by Collingwood.

YJFL Season 2020 Cancelled
As many of you would already know the YJFL have now officially cancelled the 2020 Footy season.
Whilst this decision is really disappointing for all concerned it is particularly sad for all the Cobra kids who don't get to have a kick this year, unfortunately the cancellation is a very real reminder of the current environment we are living in.
We are currently in consultation with the YJFL as to what the cancellation means for our Players, the Club and the League, and importantly the Leagues position regarding potential fee refunds. We will be in touch as soon as we have further information and provide ongoing updates as often as possible.
In the interim I would like thank everyone associated with our Club. Your amazing support during incredibly difficult times has not gone unnoticed. Everyone has worked incredibly hard, and importantly worked incredibly hard together in an effort to get our Cobra kids on the park. So to our entire community, parents, coaches, players and the ever dedicated band of Committee Members I say thanks. I know the Cobras will be back bigger and stronger than ever in season 2021.
I look forward to Catching up with you all as soon as possible, perhaps an "out of season" Sunday Sippers would be fitting.
Please stay safe and look out for each other.

YJFL Press Release - Season 2020
The YJFL have released a press statement regarding their plans for the 2020 season.
Essentially the YJFL have proposed a start date of mid-July consisting of 12 rounds followed by 2 weeks of finals in October.
Importantly all of these plans require State Government approval however we now have a date to work towards which is excellent news.
The committee continues to work with coaches and Councils to finalise our plans to commence training. We all want training to commence sooner rather than later but the rules are still incredibly restrictive in this regard, consequently we are hopeful that restrictions continue to ease so we can get training underway.
We will continue to keep in touch and provide any additional information or details as they come to hand.

CJFC congratulates former Cobra Matt Rowell on being selected by the Gold Coast Suns as Pick #1
This is a magnificent achievement by Matt who played over 100 games for the Club, and was awarded the 2015 CJFC Club Champion trophy.
Matt started his football journey at Mont Albert Auskick and progressed through the pathway program of the Cobras from U8 to U14, and then onto the Boroondara Hawks for U15.
Matt has been generous in giving back to the Club this year in assisting with training our U9 teams - a fine young man and a great example to our junior footballers.
Matt's parents Louise and David have also been great contributors to our club over many years, culminating with both being awarded Life Memberships in 2015.
The Rowell's are a true Cobras family, and we wish Matt every success in his football career.
Our Cobras 2019 Grand Finalists
Congratulations to our 3 Grand Final teams who played off on Sunday, September 1.
Our U12 Girls bought home their second Premiership in a row in a stunning 51 to 13 win over Park Orchards. Great effort girls!!!
The U13 Boys (Blue) went down in a tough encounter against Banyule, with the result in the balance until the final quarter.
And the U15 girls went agonisingly close with a 6 point loss to the previously undefeated Bulleen Templestowe. After falling 3 goals behind early in the last quarter, the girls had all the play against the wind but couldn't quite reel them in. An amazing effort.
